Real Madrid: Have PSG just sent an offer Sergio Ramos can’t refuse?

Although Real Madrid fans are still cautiously optimistic that the club will re-sign Sergio Ramos, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season, the rumors linking him to PSG continue to cause a stir.

Ramos and Real Madrid were meant for each other. It is almost inconceivable to imagine Ramos walking away from Los Blancos at the end of the 2020-2021 season without signing a new deal with the club, because he’s accomplished so much in Madrid and means so much to the club. It is hard to find another player in the world with a legacy as inextricably tied to one club as Ramos’ with Madrid.

It’s also hard to see PSG trying to poach away Ramos, given the friendly relationship between both clubs. Yet transfer rumors continue to suggest that the Parisians are making a strong push to steal away the world-class center back, who would be a game-changer for their back four.

Per a report on Onda Cero (tweet in Spanish), PSG have offered Sergio Ramos a three-year contract worth 15 million euros per year. And Real Madrid reportedly won’t match that offer.

Sergio Ramos wants a contract that is against Real Madrid’s set policy

If we assume the offer is true, it would make sense for Los Blancos not to match it, regardless of how we would feel about losing Ramos. It seems like Real cannot give Ramos a raise, and 15 million euros per year would be a raise. Secondly, the crux of the impasse between Ramos and Real is the contract length, as Ramos wants a two-year deal while Real have a policy of not giving a 34-year-old player a deal longer than one year. So a three-year deal would be completely off the table.

There are two things to keep in mind. Firstly, would PSG actually send this kind of an offer to a 34-year-old center back and even risk their relationship with Real Madrid by stealing away their club legend and captain? Secondly, would Ramos accept an offer from any club other than Madrid, even if the deal is financially a LOT better?

PSG are in a position where they have much more financial flexibility than Los Blancos, but Real can offer Ramos something no other club can. And that’s legacy. It’s up to Ramos to choose between them, if PSG have indeed submitted such a lucrative offer. The money reportedly on the table from the Ligue 1 giants is impressive, and it may be tough for Ramos to say “no” to such a sum over three years. Though you have to wonder if it would be imprudent for anyone to offer that contract, even if Ramos has shown no signs of slowing down.
