Although Real Madrid reportedly have a “verbal agreement”, per Fabrizio Romano, with David Alaba, that isn’t stopping other major clubs around Europe from trying to sign the Bayern Munich defender.
Alaba will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season, and while Real are the favorites as his dream club, the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, PSG, and Barcelona have all been linked over the past several months.
Now, BILD’s Tobias Altschäffl confirms an earlier report from Sky Sport Germany stating that David Alaba has received a “concrete” contract offer from PSG.
Sky report that Alaba has met with PSG’s president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. However, BILD report that the versatile defender still prefers a move to La Liga.
David Alaba is not the only contract situation of interest to Real Madrid supporters
Real Madrid fans have three contract situations involving defenders on their minds. Firstly, this one with Alaba. And his situation relates to Sergio Ramos’.
The captain has yet to sign a new deal with Los Blancos, though there is optimism that we may discuss Alaba as an addition to the squad rather than a direct replacement for the No. 4.
And finally, Real must hit the bargaining table with Raphael Varane, whose contract expires after the 2021-2022 season.
Alaba is having a rough season for Bayern, but his class is obvious to fans around the world. He has been an amazing player for the Bavarians over the past decade, establishing himself as one of the world’s best left backs before having an incredible season at center back when needed in the 2019-2020, treble-winning campaign for Die Roten. And we have also seen Alaba play in the midfield for Bayern, Hoffenheim, and the Austrian national team during his career.
Thus, the 28-year-old could fulfill any of those positions over the next several years for Los Blancos, if he were to officially put pen to paper with the La Liga giants. The prospect of having him and Ferland Mendy at left back is appealing, though Real also must think about young players at the position coming up the ranks like Miguel Gutierrez.
PSG’s offer is a reminder that Real Madrid are not alone in the battle to sign Alaba, and there will surely be some Premier League offers to tempt the experienced defender. But as of right now, Real remain the favorites, though their grasp on the top spot may not be fully secure.
