Marcelo’s impending return to action and role

According to a report from MARCA’s Juan Ignacio Garcia-Ochoa, Real Madrid left back Marcelo could start against Celta Vigo on Saturday, and this goes hand-in-hand with the club using a back three. In that case, there are a couple of options for Marcelo.

He could start as a traditional left-sided wing back or wide midfielder, pushing high up the pitch in an aggressive, attacking role that honestly suits him a LOT better at this stage of his career.

Or he could play more centrally. Against Getafe, we saw Vinicius Junior line up wider and push back in that sort of wide midfield role in front of Mendy as the left-sided center back, and Marcelo moved inside as a playmaker.

He was incredible. We finally saw the best of Marcelo in this position after a season full of struggles. But unfortunately, Marcelo has not been able to play since that match due to an injury. He appears to be ready to make his return on Matchday 28, and if he does, it would be exciting to see him in a playmaking role more to the middle of the park. This position could help Marcelo revive his career, as he still looked like a world-class player on that day against Getafe with five key passes, one assist, and two dribbles completed, per WhoScored.com.
