Real Madrid may have to view Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland as their No. 1 priority in the summer 2021 transfer market, as Kylian Mbappe’s situation with PSG remains unclear despite the lack of movement on his renewal talks. PSG’s asking price, combined with Mbappe’s wages, make him the much more difficult signing.

And Haaland would be just as appealing of an upgrade to a Real Madrid attack that has lacked a true top scorer for years. It has just been the well-rounded Karim Benzema carrying the load with 20 goals per season since Cristiano Ronaldo went to Juventus.

There will be competition from Manchester City and maybe even Chelsea, but there is reason to believe Los Blancos have the inside track to signing the striker.

According to a report from Josep Pedrerol of El Chiringuito, Erling Haaland has made his decision. His heart is set. He wants to choose Real Madrid over the others and move to Los Blancos in 2021. Not in 2022 with his release clause. He wants the move now. However, it is all up to Dortmund. They are the ones who must make the decision and set the price.

Real Madrid seem like the early favorites to land Erling Haaland

Dortmund will ask for a lot, as they always do. They have their price and stick to it, and, usually, teams oblige. We saw that happen with Ousmane Dembele, even when many thought the Black and Yellows had no leverage.

Haaland’s case could become interesting, though, if BVB continue to struggle in the Bundesliga and fail to make the Champions League next year. Then, they can’t blow too much smoke about their asking price. And Real could be the ones to benefit, given their relationship with Dortmund.

There is also the matter of Haaland’s wishes. His desire to move to Real could give them a boost compared to other clubs. If other clubs believe Haaland thinks only of Madrid and would not be as content with them, they may not be as aggressive at the negotiating table with their offer.

This report on Haaland is encouraging for Madridistas, but we cannot read too much into it. There is still time between now and June. Furthermore, it is merely one report. However, it is not surprising, in the sense that it’s long seemed like Haaland dreams of Madrid. Like Mbappe, he wants to be “The Guy”, and that’s exactly who he can be. There is no better place to take on that responsibility than at a Real Madrid team in 2021 that is craving that kind of player.
