Real Madrid don’t have much money to work with this summer, but they still want to make sweeping upgrades to their squad in an effort to return to being the unquestioned best club in European football. Since Cristiano Ronaldo joined Juventus, Real have fallen off that perch.

In order to get back on top, Real know they need to sign better attackers. A reunion with Ronaldo is plausible, but the club also understands they need to build sustainable success. They need to sign superstars who can help them both now and in five, even 10 years from now.

According to a report from Josep Pedrerol on El Chiringuito, Real Madrid’s objective in the summer 2021 transfer window is to sign three superstars. They want to sign Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, and David Alaba.

Ambitious, no? Signing all three is straight-up impossible. Well, I mean, “impossible” is a dangerous word as far as the football market is considered, but it’s hard to imagine Real affording the wages of all three, let alone beating out competing clubs for the signatures of both Bundesliga standouts.

Real Madrid are showing a refreshing ambition on the transfer market

But I love the ambition. We need to see that kind of desire to signing established, world-class players from Florentino Perez, because that’s really been lacking. In the last couple of transfer windows, Real Madrid have only signed one world-class player in Eden Hazard. And that signing has not worked out due to rotten luck. It shows in the on-field product, too.

Madridistas know that they have a great defense and midfield, but what they’ve seen from the attackers outside of Karim Benzema has largely not been good enough. The young players will surely get better, but a club like Real Madrid cannot afford to “wait and see”.

It is extremely difficult to envision Los Blancos completing this triple-swoop, but two of the three is likely. And at least one seems like a “must”, even in this economic climate. Alaba has already agreed to a handshake deal with Real and has, so far, resisted overtures from competitors.

Haaland has reportedly chosen to move to Real this summer. They are the clear favorites to sign him, even amidst competing interest from Manchester City. As for Mbappe, we have not heard a peep about any legitimate competitors. It is either Real Madrid or PSG. A formidable battle, to be sure, but note that Mbappe has said “no” to PSG several times already.
