We are at the point in the calendar year when Real Madrid fans are beginning to think about renewal deals for their favorite players. Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos, and Lucas Vazquez are the notable names on expiring contracts this season, while the likes of Raphael Varane, Nacho Fernandez, Dani Carvajal, and Karim Benzema have contracts ending after the next season.

Currently, many Madridistas are a bit worried about Ramos’ future with the club, as he still has not signed his renewal offer from Los Merengues. It’s hard envisioning him walking away, but, if he does, the blow may be softened by how well Nacho and Eder Militao have been playing.

Ramos aside, there is some bright news regarding the futures of two other superstar players and their renewal situations.

According to a report from Deportes Cuatro, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and center midfielder Luka Modric have agreed to renewals.

Luka Modric, Karim Benzema are taking paycuts and staying an additional year at Real Madrid

Benzema will sign a one-year extension so that his new deal ends after the 2022-2023 season, while Modric will sign on for the 2021-2022 campaign.

Neither renewal was ever in doubt. For months, we’ve heard word that Modric would sign a one-year extension. And Benz’s future has been locked in since last year. Though both players do not like to make much fanfare about their futures.

They stick to the club, they are taking the paycuts Real is requiring due to the pandemic, and they are here to play for as long as they feel they are not holding back the stars of the future.

Benzema remains a Player of the Year candidate in La Liga, while Modric is also still among the very best players in European football. Despite being over the age of 30, both men are contributing at the highest level for a team that has a real shot at winning the Champions League and La Liga in 2020-2021. Additionally, they are assets and leaders for the young players like Fede Valverde and Vinicius Junior.
