Real Madrid center back Sergio Ramos suffered an injury during the March international break, and it was his second significant injury of the season after the one in January against Osasuna.

Ramos tried to return too early and paid the price. He really wanted to help the team as captain in the elimination match against Chelsea, but Ramos was clearly not healthy. Ramos struggled in the 2-0 loss to the Blues, playing poorly. Worse yet, the legendary No. 4 suffered another injury and has been out since.

Initially, there was fear that Ramos’ season was over and that he may have even played his last game for Real Madrid against Chelsea. He still has not signed an extension with Real and is an impending free agent, with rumors of a move to PSG swirling.

But according to a report from Sergio Quirante for DirectoGol, Sergio Ramos is going to play against Villarreal to close the season. Quirante reports that his recovery is going well and that he’ll be able to train with the team next week.

Sergio Ramos could help Real Madrid clinch the title vs. Villarreal

Real Madrid will face Villarreal on Sunday, May 23 in the evening. Last season, they clinched the title by beating Villarreal in the summer, and the same could happen this season. But Los Blancos do have two tough games prior to the clash against Villarreal, as they must face Granada at Los Carmenes this Thursday and then Athletic Club over the weekend at the vaunted San Mames. Those are two other teams they defeated, with clean sheets, last summer en route to the league title.

Right now, Real are thin in defense. Raphael Varane, Ferland Mendy, and Marcelo are unavailable against Granada, and Alvaro Odriozola is also in some doubt. That leaves Miguel Gutierrez, Eder Militao, Nacho Fernandez, and Odriozola as the only available defensive players for Zinedine Zidane. So Ramos’ return would be a significant boost, in addition to Varane’s.

Nobody wants any player to be rushed back. As we saw with Ramos, there are consequences when this happens. But it would be nice to see Ramos out there on May 23 against a very tough Yellow Submarine side. Who knows? Maybe he will start and help the team clinch another title.
