ST Luka Jovic

It’s pretty remarkable to think that, according to Luka Jovic himself, Zinedine Zidane was the one who pushed to sign the Serbian international in the 2019 transfer window. Because since then, Zidane hasn’t exactly given Jovic many chances, nor has he tried to change his tactics to accommodate the young striker.

Jovic only started in back-to-back matches once in his Real Madrid career, and that was to start the 2020-2021 campaign against Real Sociedad and Real Betis. Although Jovic didn’t light it up in either match, Real did score three goals, with Jovic drawing a red card on Emerson that changed the game at the Benito Villamarin.

Since the winter transfer window, Jovic has been back at Eintracht Frankfurt on a loan deal. After a hot start to his return to Germany, Jovic has gone cold. And it’s not easy getting playing time when Andre Silva is playing as well as he is up top.

That said, Jovic’s talent is not in question. He’s a more well-rounded striker than people think, and he is an excellent athlete who can score some tremendous goals with consistency. But he needs consistency in opportunity so that he can show consistency in his performances.

A new manager with new tactical ideas could help Jovic carve out a rotational role at Real Madrid or even form a striker partnership with Karim Benzema. In all honesty, the writing is probably on the wall for Jovic, as it is for Isco and Marcelo, but that’s why I’m calling this a “lifeline”. A new manager could be the impetus for Jovic getting one last chance instead of getting transferred out to, say, Milan.
