Real Madrid’s campaign saw the emergence of new talents within the squad and some exciting ones at that. Alongside the emergence of Éder Militão, there were Castilla players who also caught the eye of Zidane and the supporters.

Two names who certainly put in a good account of themselves were Antonio Blanco and Miguel Gutierrez. The former stepped into midfield, putting in plenty of assured performances – showcasing his comfort on the ball, his capability to progress whilst showing a tenacity and work rate to do the hard yards. Real had long been chasing a back-up to Casemiro, a long-neglected position, however, Blanco seems a ready-made solution that brings no financial burden. A massive plus considering the delicate financial situation.

Miguel also showcased the brilliant work that Raúl is doing, when the full-back was called up to fill in for Ferland Mendy. Like Blanco, his confidence was immediately apparent. The youngster stepped in as if he had been playing with the first team his entire life, showing no nerves in any sense. Even in Real’s final game of the season, a must-win, Miguel stepped up to the plate and looked like he belonged.

These developments are important, why? Real Madrid has a host of players who are simply not at the level required. Marcelo has long been declining, the fact that Zidane has decided to put an inexperienced youth player in over him shows how far he has fallen. Even his famed offensive ability is not what it was, he is not the marauding presence he once was.

Players like Marcelo, Isco, Asensio and Mariano – for one reason or another, are not at the level required. Isco and Asensio have both fallen out of favour, Mariano has failed to do the job required. Real need to move on and get players in who can take the opportunity and provide what is needed.
