Real Madrid have long been rumored to be in the market for another center back in the case that either Sergio Ramos or Raphael Varane leave the club. Although it seems like Ramos will ultimately circle back to Real despite not signing his extension yet, Varane’s situation is a little more difficult to read. And Real, if forced to sell, could replace him with a younger option.

Jules Kounde has always been the favorite of Madridistas for his uncanny combination of youth and experience, his intelligent reading of the game, and his passing accuracy. He could be an ideal replacement for Varane and future center back partner for Eder Militao.

Therefore, fans must be excited to see Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna report that Real Madrid have been making a push to sign Jules Kounde.

They have reportedly “accelerated” their pursuit of the Sevilla center back, which is even leading the Andalusians to inquire about a new breakout star in Ligue 1, Loic Bade of Lens.

Real Madrid will have a tough time meeting Sevilla’s asking price for Jules Kounde

Signing Kounde will be extremely difficult for the clubs interested in him, which should include Real Madrid and Manchester United (one of Varane’s expected suitors, by the way).

Because Kounde’s release clause is at around 90 million euros, and Sevilla will want to get as close to that amount of money as possible from an interested party.

Despite being 22 years old, Kounde is already close to the world-class level and was arguably the best center back in LaLiga this season due to injuries to Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane during crucial parts of the campaign.

So if you want to replace one of the best, you had better replace him WITH one of the best. That appears to be the logic when it comes to Los Blancos’ pursuit of Kounde, though I cannot stress enough how difficult it would be to make this transfer financially. And doubly so when you consider both the needs at forward and the caliber of players Real want to transform the attack, namely fellow French standout Kylian Mbappe.
