Roma ST Borja Mayoral

After an encouraging 2019-2020 season with Levante in which he scored eight goals and registered two assists, Borja Mayoral had a chance at staying with the first team in 2020-2021. Zinedine Zidane did not get his wish, however, as Real Madrid decided to loan Mayoral out to AS Roma after the first couple of matches of the season, even though they ended up loaning Luka Jovic in the winter anyway.

Mayoral’s deal with Roma includes an option to buy of 15 million euros this summer and 20 million euros next summer. After it seemed like Mayoral would surely head to Roma permanently, there are now doubts about the Giallorossi exercising his purchase option.

The difference in price is only five million euros, so Roma may want to get an extra season to see just how good Mayoral really is, especially against bigger clubs. Jose Mourinho is coming in as a new manager, and he may have new ideas for Mayoral. It makes sense for Roma not to want to commit to him all of a sudden.

But if he isn’t sold this summer, I really do think he will be sold next summer. Mayoral is 24 and scored 17 goals with 4 assists in all competitions this past season. That’s definitely worth 15 million euros. I have a feeling some Real Madrid fans are going to end up regretting this transfer.
