After all, he’s Sergio Ramos, one of the greatest defenders of all time

In my opinion, it is a shame that we are actually finding reasons for the club to renew the contract of the current club captain and the greatest centre-back in the history of Real Madrid. It is Sergio Ramos we are talking about, a defender who has been a symbol of Madridismo and has been the captain who has always represented the club’s values.

He’s a player who has contributed a lot to this club, in the last 16 years he has spent at Los Blancos. His records and achievements speak for themselves, there shouldn’t be any doubt about his abilities.

He might be a 35-year-old player now, but he’s still playing at the highest level. Agreed that he had a disappointing 2020/21 season with injuries ruining his season, but we should also forget that his return was forced at certain moments of the season. He did pull off an injury due to his greed of setting up a record for Spain, but this one season filled with injuries doesn’t make him an injury-prone player.

He is someone who takes a lot of care for his body and has been one of the fittest players in Europe from 2005 to 2020, alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Maybe the injuries of the 2020/21 season did cause some harm to his ambitions of demanding a two-year contract, but his performances were superb in games that he played whenever he was fit and healthy.

I always felt that Ramos deserved the two-year contract that he asked for, but that goes against the club’s policy of giving only a year extension to players on the wrong side of thirty. This makes the situation much more difficult. But keeping all other factors in mind, it is necessary for Ramos and the club to reach an agreement. And given how stubborn both Florentino Perez and Ramos have been, it is time to do what’s right. They need to keep their egos aside and do what’s better for the club.

Seeing a new signing earn the same wages as him might infuriate Ramos, but after a disappointing season now it is the time for the captain to prove a point that he’s still the best one out there. And that is possible only if he can continue at Real Madrid. After all these years, he shouldn’t be proving something to the club at this age, but the situations and the stubbornness of the current board might force Ramos to do so if he wants to continue at the club of his life. Maybe he might have to come to a step-down and lower his demands and take the approach adopted by Luka Modric.

It is a shame that Real Madrid isn’t respecting the demands of their captain who has done so much for the club, and even the captain is standing firm in these tough times, but the situation is like this and we can’t do anything about it. But one thing is for sure, Ramos’ continuity is the best solution for both parties in this delicate situation.

But as a fan, it would be a great sight to see Sergio Ramos, the man who gave his hundred percent on the pitch while playing for the club and took the club to greater heights with his service, retire at Real Madrid. As Fernando Hierro said, a club legend like Ramos definitely deserves to retire at the club.
