Real Madrid Player Ratings after 1st round of Euro 2020
Real Madrid might not be playing in the summer, but there is no time for a break as Los Blancos have eight players representing their national team in the UEFA EURO 2020. In this series, I will follow Real Madrid players playing for their respective national teams in the EUROs and rate their performances after each round.
Here is how the Real Madrid players performed in the EURO after the first round of games on the group stage.
Thibaut Courtois – 7/10
Courtois had very little to do in the game against Russia. The Belgian team dominated the proceedings, and the Russian’s barely threatened Courtois’ goal. He was well-positioned to make a regulation save from Mario Fernandes’ header.
Eden Hazard – 6.5/10
Hazard played the last 20 minutes of the match against Russia. Belgium was well in control and two goals ahead when the Real Madrid winger entered the fray. Hazard looked eager to put his stamp on the competition. He only had 18 touches in the game but still managed to complete three dribbles.
Gareth Bale – 3.5/10
Bale captained Wales in their first match of the EURO 2020 against Switzerland. The game ended with a 1-1 draw. Wales needed their skipper to be more than a passenger in the game if they wanted to come away with the three points. Bale was an invisible figure for large parts of the game, and when he did get on the ball, his efforts were massively underwhelming.

David Alaba – 8.5/10
Alaba is yet to play his first game for Real Madrid but watching him play for Austria against North Macedonia in the first round of Euro 2020 was a treat for Madridistas. He influenced the game from the back, completed 99 passes with 93 percent accuracy and two key passes. He was also solid in defense, winning three tackles and two clearances. Alaba put a brilliant ball into the box to assist the winner.
Luka Modric – 7/10
Croatia lost 1-0 to England in their opening match, and Modric often looked like he was fighting for a lost cause. Modric tried his best to lift his team, but the Croatian attack was horrid.
The Real Madrid midfielder played a deeper and helped his team create some chances as he contributed with two key passes. However, his teammates around him barely provided any support.
Toni Kroos – 7/10
Kroos and Germany started their Euro 2020 campaign with a 0-1 loss to France. Kroos was exquisite with his passing as usual. The Real Madrid no.8 completed 106 passes at 94 percent accuracy, including 14 of 14 long balls. He helped Germany control the second half of the match, but the attack fell flat on the night.
Raphael Varane – 8.5/10
Varane was a defensive monster against Germany. His anticipation was elite as he read the game perfectly and thwarted anything the German’s threw at France’s defense. He completed nine clearances, along with winning 6/6 duels, two interceptions, and two blocks. He was my man of the match alongside Paul Pogba.
Karim Benzema – 5/10
Benzema did not have the best of games. He put the ball in the back of the net in the second half, but an offside call denied him a dream return to a major tournament with his national team.
