Real Madrid might not be playing in the summer, but there is no time for a break as Los Blancos have eight players representing their national team in the UEFA EURO 2020. In this series, I will follow Real Madrid players playing for their respective national teams in the EUROs and rate their performances after each round.
Here is how the Real Madrid players performed in the EURO after the second round of games on the group stage.
Gareth Bale – 9.5/10
In my previous ratings, I mentioned Wales needed a lot more from their captain to make an impact in this year’s competition, and that is what we got from Gareth Bale. The Welsh Dragon took the game by storm and led his team to victory against Turkey.
Bale created five big chances in the game that included two assists, completed three dribbles, and won a penalty, per Sofascore.com. He also contributed defensively with eight winning duels, won three clearances, and two interceptions. It would have been a 10/10 performance for the Real Madrid player had he converted his spot-kick.
Thibaut Courtois – 7.5/10
Courtois, as usual, commanded his area well. He made four saves, and he was not at fault for Denmark’s goal.
Eden Hazard – 7/10
Hazard is slowly finding some form. He came in at the hour mark and found himself in some good positions. He also assisted Kevin De Bryune’s winner. Roberto Martinez will be delighted to have his star man find fitness and form as they prepare for the knockout stages of the EURO.
David Alaba – 4/10
As exciting as it was for Madridistas to see David Alaba in Austria’s first match of the competition, it was an equally disappointing turnaround against the Netherlands. He gave away the penalty with a lazy tackle that gave the Dutch their lead.
Furthermore, he lost the duel against Memphis Depay in the sequence that led to the second goal. It was an overall disappointing performance from Alaba.
Luka Modric – 7/10
Modric had a respectable performance against the Czech Republic. He created two chances and won five duels. However, his deeper positioning in Zlatko Dalic’s system restricts his attacking prowess. One can wonder if Croatia will benefit from the former Balan D’or winner playing further up the pitch.
Toni Kroos – 7.5/10
Toni Kroos was the conductor that shaped Germany’s vital 4-2 win over Portugal. The German midfielder had the most touches in the match and helped his team dictate the tempo.
According to Whoscored.com, Kroos completed 85 passes at an astounding 96.5 percent accuracy. His ability to read the game scored him game-high four interceptions allowing Germany to continue pressuring Fernando Santos’ men on the attacking end.
Raphael Varane – 6/10
Varane did not have much to do defensively against Hungary as the home team barely threatened in attack. However, the Real Madrid defender did get beat by Atilla Fiola in Hungary’s only goal of the game.
Karim Benzema – 6/10
Benzema had some good link-ups with his teammates in the 1-1 draw against Hungary. Real Madrid player of the seasons’ movements was excellent, he completed three dribbles, and he found himself in a dangerous position. Benzema did miss a big chance after Kylian Mbappe set him up at the 18-yard box.
