Joakim Maehle (Denmark and Atalanta)

Denmark has been fantastic in this edition of the Euros and they progressed into the semifinals as the dark horses. The main reasons behind their progress have been their willingness to do well for their ailing teammate, and some outstanding performances from their individuals. One such player who highly impressed me during the tournament is Joakim Maehle.

Maehle has been highly crucial for Denmark from the right and scored two goals on their way to the semifinals. He has also been defensively solid, making six tackles and 31 recoveries throughout the tournament. He has replicated the same in the last six months at the Bergamo, where he has become a vital cog of the well-oiled machine of Atalanta.

As a wide player, he also has the habit of popping up late in the box to latch onto a cross and score. The two superb goals he scored against Wales and Russia respectively are a testament to that, and he is also a creative outlet from wide zones. Overall he is rock solid in defence, and is great in attack, with his 185 cm height giving him an edge in aerial duels.

He plays as a right wingback for the Italian club, but he also has the ability to play as a right-back and a wide midfielder on either flank. If he undergoes a transformation as Gareth Bale did at Spurs, he will make one hell of a winger. With Real Madrid in need of some added quality on the right side due to constant injuries to Carvajal and disappointing wingers, a versatile player like Maehle can be a great option.
