Aymeric Laporte

In the quest for a new center-back, a surprise transfer target has emerged. And that player is Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte. Laporte has recently changed his playing nationality from France to Spain. He featured in all six games Spain played in Euros and put up a strong display.

Laporte has indicated his desire to leave Manchester City due to a lack of playing time last season. He was the third choice center-back at City last season, behind Ruben Dias and John Stones. Reportedly, the player wants to come to Madrid, to either Atlético or Real.

Laporte can fit in the role of a ball-playing center-back, a part previously carried out by Sergio Ramos. The money factor also helps in Laporte’s case. He will cost considerably lesser than Kounde and Pau Torres. On top of that, like the two aforementioned players, he is already accustomed to playing in La Liga. In this article, my colleague Sai Siddharta discussed whether the club should go all-out for Aymeric Laporte.

Laporte is tall and athletic and capable of playing accurate long balls, which can be beneficial against high pressing teams. Moreover, he can play in both LCB and RCB positions. However, there are some downsides to his signing. His injury record is alarming, as he missed a large chunk of game time due to a knee injury in 2019. That’s the only thing that turns this transfer into a gamble that the club should take.
