The Captain’s Armband:Letting go of our captain and vice-captain in the same window would be difficult, no ifs and buts to it. The difficulty doesn’t lie with ensuring that the fans are accepting of the fact but rather ensuring that the person who ends up taking the armband is able to take on the responsibility. This is something that Marcelo can definitely do albeit in a different way than Sergio Ramos. If the Brazilian were to leave the club, Karim Benzema would be the man in charge and even though he has what it takes, the correct choice right now is definitely Marcelo.

He won’t be a regular starter at the club and it remains to be seen if he is even the backup left-back whenever Ferland Mendy isn’t playing, but he is a strong character behind the scenes and will definitely have a big role to play in the dressing room. He has been through it all at Real Madrid and his one-of-a-kind experience could be a gamechanger during the course of a season which will have many difficulties.

As captain for the upcoming campaign, Marcelo’s main duties won’t be on the pitch during the matches but rather in the background where the team will need his voice to drive them forward. Even though his physical abilities on the pitch have clearly declined, his voice and impact on the team have only continued to grow.
