What Can Be Expected of Marcelo at Real Madrid?
Possible Position Change:
As always, there is talk of Real Madrid being in need of signing players. To a certain extent, there is truth to that but what’s forgotten is the abundance of talented players Los Merengues have at their disposal and the left-back position is no different. Ferland Mendy will be expected to continue as the starter but will Miguel Gutierrez get a much-deserved call up to be a permanent part of the senior squad? That depends on Carlo Ancelotti but if he does move forward with that, Marcelo’s place in the team becomes a lot more difficult.
During the first preseason match, we saw Marcelo continue to struggle at left-back but once Miguel was brought on, the Brazilian moved to a more attacking role which suited him a lot more and he looked less worried. Unfortunately for him though, there are quite a few players fighting for the same position in Vinicius Junior, Eden Hazard and Rodrygo Goes – all of which can offer more than the Brazilian when going forward.
It seems as though Marcelo will be used and we will see him often. But, not as a starter, rather as a “super-sub” when Real Madrid need some fresh legs going forward or simply something different – both of which can be done extremely effectively by Marcelo who still has some tricks up his sleeves.
Marcelo still has a lot to offer and his legacy at Real Madrid will not be tarnished. He is a player who has given his all to the club and has lifted us to new heights time and time again. Even though he isn’t the player he once was and we probably will not be seeing too much of him in the upcoming season, he will be an integral part of this team. He is our captain and has gained the respect that any captain at the club has had.
Marcelo’s character is what Real Madrid will be counting on the most and that’s something that has been cultivated throughout his years at the club.
