Real Madrid: Why moving back to Mallorca isn’t the best option for Kubo

Takefusa Kubo is a very talented player. He’s one of Real Madrid’s most prized possessions when it comes to youngsters, and they want nothing more than to see him improve as a player and eventually play for the first team. For now, though, he needs to prove that he’s good enough, and needs to keep improving so that more and better chances come his way.

There are a number of La Liga clubs that would want to attain his services from Real Madrid, and I’m not really surprised. But, one of those clubs is Mallorca, and as my colleague Kevin pointed out in his piece, Mallorca shouldn’t be seen as an underwhelming loan destination, even though they’re a newly promoted side. That’s true, but I still don’t think Kubo should move to Mallorca, but I have another reason for it.

As I’ve pointed out in countless other articles, Kubo didn’t have a great time at teams like Villarreal and Getafe partly because of the role that was assigned to him. He didn’t have the freedom to roam freely in the attacking third, and I think that affected his performances.

Now, when we look at his first stint at Mallorca, Kubo was their best player! Every single attack was inaugurated because of him, and he was the biggest attacking threat that the team possessed. One thing, though, was that he didn’t have many responsibilities or obligations to track back or stay in position so as to not cause positional chaos.

Real Madrid sending Kubo back to Mallorca has a few pros, but some cons too

Now, going to the same club, playing with similar players under the same manager definitely has its pros. I’m not denying that, because having a feeling of being fully settled in is very important, and Kubo will see familiar faces, which will help him mentally.

But, my problem with it is a little different. I think that while going back to Mallorca seems like a good deal, it actually doesn’t help him in aspects of the game that he needs help in. Positional awareness, trying to create danger while being assigned to a specific role and space, tracking back to support the defense are important aspects for a winger, and unless you’re outlandishly good, you don’t get the ability to roam freely.

Of course, moving to Mallorca will help him gain more confidence, and he might even get better at things he’s already good at. But, to play for a big team, those things I mentioned above are very important, and that’s why I think Real Madrid should try to find another club for him. Of course, I’d rather he plays at Mallorca than in any other league, but you get my point.

Kubo is a fantastic player and has the potential to play for Real Madrid, but he will need to show that he’s up for the task, no matter where he goes.
