When Zinedine Zidane was still managing Real Madrid, Paul Pogba was regularly linked to the Royal White club. It was no secret that Zizou wanted to work with the current standout midfielder of the French national team, and with Pogba’s contract set to run out after the 2021-2022 season, Madridistas felt there was a chance their team could make a swoop for Pogba. And Pogba didn’t exactly hide that he wanted to leave Manchester United for greener pastures.

In the end, the deal never got done. United set an asking price that Real wanted to reduce, and when there was a chance it could be reduced, the price was still too much due to the sudden economic crisis in 2020, created by COVID-19. And one year later, Zidane stepped down as the club’s manager.

Yet Real Madrid fans are still thinking about Paul Pogba as a possible signing in 2022. He still has one year left on his deal, and the allure of Los Blancos likely remains strong, especially if the club can sign Kylian Mbappe or even Erling Haaland.

On Matchday 1 of the Premier League, Pogba, who had struggled to find consistency in the United lineup for a couple of seasons, put on a show against Leeds with four assists. Pogba picked up where he left off from the Euros as France’s standout performer, weaving his technical magic against a genuinely good Premier League side.

Real Madrid could forge a dream Mbappe, Benzema, and Pogba connection

Madridistas were predictably gushing over their dream midfield target, particularly at a time in which Real’s own midfield depth is now in question, exacerbated by the unrest surrounding Martin Odegaard’s future.

There is no doubt that the 2022 transfer window is going to be an exciting one for Madridistas. The prospect of signing the likes of Mbappe, Haaland, Pogba, Eduardo Camavinga, Antonio Rudiger, and Leon Goretzka is certainly exciting. These are but a handful of the major names who could be available as free agents, and it is entirely possible for Real to sign Mbappe and two other key players by next summer. Pogba is absolutely high on that list, perhaps only surpassed by the young Galactic forwards themselves.

Muddassir’s point is well-taken. Not only has Pogba been a sight to behold in recent months, but it is also remarkable that he had so many vociferous critics in the first place. At Juventus, Pogba was one of the premier midfielders in the world and thus became a record transfer to United. And although he’s had some bumps at United, those are more due to circumstance.

Should Real Madrid swoop for Pogba? On a free, absolutely. They can make room for a player of his quality, and he is both versatile and unselfish enough to make it work.

dark. Next. A Kylian Mbappe transfer prediction for Real Madrid

Whether he will be available or not, however, depends on how the season unfolds for United. After acquiring Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane this summer and with Bruno Fernandes linking up well with Pogba, there’s a chance the club has finally done enough to convince the Frenchman to hold off on his Real Madrid dream.
