As Madridistas continue to scour the web for the latest news regarding PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid have made another crucial move that will help the club for the next five seasons to come.
After losing Sergio Ramos to free agency this past season and having already agreed to official or handshake extensions with Dani Carvajal, Luka Modric, and Karim Benzema, Los Blancos have secured the signature of another untouchable starter in their XI.
The official Real Madrid Twitter account posted Thibaut Courtois holding a jersey with president Florentino Perez, and the kit had the number “2026”. They tweeted the hashtag #Courtois2026 to go with the photo, signifying that they have extended the world-class goalkeeper through the 2025-2026 season.
You can view the tweet and photo below.
After a rough first season with Real Madrid in 2018-2019 that was likely the result of the squad’s overall malaise, Thibaut Courtois had a season for the ages in 2019-2020. The Zamora Trophy winner was vital to Los Blancos capturing their 34th LaLiga title in Zinedine Zidane’s full season back, especially during the summer when football returned from lockdown.
In Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid have a goalkeeper who can stand with the best of the best
Courtois was, once again, amazing in 2020-2021. He, Toni Kroos, and Karim Benzema were among the best players in European football that season, and Courtois’ jaw-dropping saves were a huge reason why Real competed for the league title until the very last moment of the season. With so many injuries to the back four and positive COVID tests, Courtois stepped up as a leader and was a very safe last man to have.
In total, Courtois saved 81.1 percent of the shots he faced last season. The year before, he allowed fewer than 0.60 goals per 90 minutes with a clean sheet in more than half of his appearances in Spain’s top flight.
Courtois, statistically speaking, is on his way to becoming a club legend. He is putting up numbers that stand with any goalkeeper in Real Madrid history. And with more big-game performances and with his accountability after every tough performance, Courtois is also becoming a fan favorite sentimentally to Madridistas.
After he faced so many doubts and criticisms, Madridistas have nothing but admiration for Courtois, who did not let any of that stand in his way despite the fact that he faced the sharpest harpoons of the Santiago Bernabeu. Courtois has reached the heights he was at before Real Madrid and may be even on his way to surpassing him. Jan Oblak and Manuel Neuer have had to make room for Courtois at the table in the “best in the world” discussion.
So it is wonderful to hear that Real Madrid have him under wraps for a handful of more seasons, and hopefully more to come. What Courtois has brought to this team post-Keylor Navas is indescribable, and without comparing these two great goalkeepers, it’s fair to say that Madridistas are now happy with how things have turned out. Courtois was worth every penny. And then some.
