Real Madrid: Five players who are in their final season with the club
Isco
Another player whose contract will be expiring next summer, and will leave Real Madrid as a free agent. But compared to Marcelo and Bale, Isco is on the younger side of 30 and his contract won’t be renewed by Real Madrid, which speaks loads about how disappointing Isco has been.
When Isco signed a massive contract extension in 2017, he was at the peak of his powers, which made Florentino Perez seal the Spaniard’s future at Real Madrid for five more years. And Isco was 25 then, and everyone felt that Isco was only getting started. But no one could’ve predicted such a downfall of Isco, who has been heavily inconsistent and below-par since 2018/19.
Even Zidane, one of Isco’s greatest admirers, gave up on the former Malaga man after repeated trials of reviving the playmaker. From being untouchable in 2018 with a huge release clause of 700 million, Isco came to the position of being on the market for around 30 million in 2020.
An exit in the summer looked highly possible with Isco’s entourage conveying to the club in November 2020 that the midfielder wanted to leave the club. But not many clubs were interested in signing Isco despite the lower price tag, due to his high wages. But with his contract finally expiring next year, Real Madrid will finally let go of the Spaniard and clear some space on the wage bill.
After 8 years at Real Madrid which included five brilliant seasons, it is tough to say if Isco is a club legend or not. But one would definitely agree with the fact that Isco will leave Real Madrid as a player who could have achieved a lot more.
