Karim Benzema

The on-field captain and the best player of the team, Karim Benzema, has been absolutely phenomenal for Real Madrid this season. He’s had an excellent start to the season with 8 goals and 7 assists to his name in 7 LaLiga games. At this point in time, no manager would want to stop him and let the Frenchman continue his purple patch. But maybe it’s time Karim can be used intelligently.

Benzema is one of those players who isn’t injured regularly, thanks to his excellent fitness regime. Even if he suffers an injury, he surprises everyone by returning earlier than expected. He shows such dedication towards his profession and takes great care of his body. But he will turn 34 this coming December and he isn’t getting any younger. He needs to rest regularly, so that he can be at his best when it matters more.

He’s finally being called up to the French national team, which is great for his career and for the player himself. But he has to play 3 games in a space of 8 days in the international break, which isn’t great for the Nueve. So far he has started every game for Real Madrid this season and has played every game for his club and country. Maybe Ancelotti can try to rest him on Tuesday night, and start Luka Jovic in his place.

There’s no replacement for Karim Benzema at Real Madrid. He’s the fulcrum of the attack and is the leader of the team now. He’s the one who guides the youngsters and tries to make life easier for them. So benching him for a Champions League game would sound like a terrible idea to some fans. But decisions like these might be important for Benzema’s wellness, and also for the confidence of the Serbian Luka Jovic, who’s waiting for an opportunity and is hungry to prove himself.
