The right-back situation is surely troublesome, but in the recent matchdays, the central defense has looked like a bigger problem. Eder Militao and David Alaba have looked to have settled better than Nacho, who has been Los Blancos’ poorest link in play so far in the season. And, that is where Real Madrid needs to expand their options. Signing a center-back in their prime could be a quick solution and the player making the first case is Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte.

Laporte isn’t a new name on Real Madrid’s transfer radar. He was linked during the summer transfer window but the club seemed to have settled for David Alaba as their only defensive signing of the summer. He even made it to our list of defensive transfer targets who impressed during the European Championships.

At 27 years of age, Laporte is a player well in his prime. His prowess on the ball is well talked about and we have seen him performing for both his club and country very satisfactorily. He is a very good passer of the ball and thrives on his long balls, a part of his play where he absolutely shines. He is averaging 10 long balls per game in the World Cup qualifiers for Spain and five per game in the Premier League so far, per WhoScored. And, That is a brilliant record.

He is a modern, ball-playing center-back that Carlo Ancelotti would love to work with. He looks to build up play from the back and is immaculate with his passing. And nonetheless, having someone like him even for a few couples of seasons foreseeably would be a huge relief for Madridistas whose hope currently is hanging on a fragile central defense.
