Real Madrid Transfers: 3 underrated free-agent targets to look at in 2022
By Avi Nagar
Matthias Ginter
The second player on our list is another defender Matthias Ginter. The German plies his trade in the Bundesliga outfit Borussia Mochengladbach. The center-back has 44 caps for the German national team and has quietly impressed over the years.
Ginter has attracted interest from a host of clubs, most notably Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. The future of Ginter also depends on that of fellow German stars Niklas Sule and Antonio Rudiger, both of whom also have their contracts expiring next summer. Should Real Madrid miss out on Rudiger, Matthias Ginter could be a great addition to the team. He would add a much-needed depth in defense. Only Militao and Alaba are worthy starters at CB as Nacho can no longer be trusted to play week-in and week-out.
Statistics-wise, Matthias Ginter lies head to head with some top defenders of Europe. Among the quality center-backs like Ruben Dias, Rafael Varane, Matthijs De Ligt (another reported target), Ginter led the line in terms of interceptions, offsides won, and blocks per game in the 2020/21 season. Ginter also excels in attempting long balls, a key attribute for a modern-day center-back. He had an average of 4 long balls per game last season, higher than all three previously mentioned players. Ginter also has a commendable aerial presence, with an average of 2.7 aerial duels won per game.
If Real Madrid cannot land one of their priority transfers, they should consider Matthias Ginter.
