RIGHT BACK

Dani Carvajal when fit is a terrific right back and arguably the best in the world in his position, but his fitness has been a cause for concern over the past few months. The Spaniard has had a tough time with injuries but has now revealed that he has made changes to his diet and other performance-based aspects to try and put those issues to bed. Yet a risk cannot be taken.

Real Madrid would do good with a right-back in the squad particularly because Lucas Vazquez has struggled to win aerial battles this season and looks a tad bit slower compared to his old self. He has also seemingly slowed down and has not really thrived in Carlo Ancelotti’s offensive system as he did in Zinedine Zidane’s defensive low-block where there was not much running to be done.

Alvaro Odriozola has been having a productive loan spell at Fiorentina and his performances may compel the club into wanting to call him back for the second half of the season. The Spaniard also played on a regular basis in April and May last season and was a fairly reliable option. Moreover, he is happy to play second-fiddle and his attacking attributes are always an asset for the team.

Given how good Carvajal is when fit and also the fact that Real Madrid recently renewed his contract, buying a new player does not really make sense for the right flank of defence, and more so because of the fact that Odriozola deserves a chance after the decent bit of work he has done in the Serie A too.
