Real Madrid might sell this loanee to Serie A’s most improved team in January

Real Madrid are generally not too active during the winter transfer window, especially when it comes to signing a player mid-season. However, the club is always open to the idea of letting players leave if they wish to mid-season in search of a better opportunity elsewhere.

We witnessed it last season when Luka Jovic returned to Eintracht Frankfurt on a six-month loan, and Martin Odegaard was also sent out on loan to Arsenal before returning as a permanent signing for the Gunners.

This winter, Real Madrid could possibly decide the future of one loanee out of their current five loaned-out players. That one player is Borja Mayoral who is unhappy with his situation in Rome and is on the lookout for a more prominent role elsewhere.

Borja Mayoral always dreamt of being a Real Madrid player. The Spaniard joined the club’s youth system in 2007 and quickly went up the ranks. He grew into a popular figure during his time with the Castilla- scoring 17 goals and five assists in 38 games. He quickly earned his first-team call-up and made his debut after coming on for Toni Kroos in the 2015/16 season.

Borja Mayoral was a productive striker in Serie A last season

After spending a season out on loan, Mayoral returned in 2017 and was then subsequently loaned out to Levante at the end of the season. After his two-year spell at Levante, Zinedine Zidane reportedly wanted Mayoral to be his second-choice striker ahead of the 60 million euro signing, Luka Jovic. However, the Spaniard preferred leaving on loan for AS Roma in search of more minutes and an important role.

At Roma, Mayoral settled down to life in Italy comfortably and instantly got off the mark in the Serie A and Europa League. He completed the season as AS Roma’s top-scorer with 17 goals and seven assists in all competitions.

Despite being one of the best strikers in Serie A last season, the 23-year-old currently finds himself confined to the bench under new manager, Jose Mourinho. The former Real Madrid manager signed Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea which has limited Borja Mayoral’s minutes this season.

With just seven appearances across all competitions, Mayoral wants to leave AS Roma in search of greener pastures. The 23-year-old does not seem to have Mourinho’s confidence and could be better off at another club with a more important role and regular minutes.

Real Madrid want 15 million euros from Fiorentina

According to La Nazione, Borja Mayoral is reportedly closing in on a deal with Fiorentina in the Serie A. Fiorentina are interested in signing the striker in January on a permanent deal. Real Madrid are open to the idea of permanently parting ways with Mayoral and have set a price tag around the ballpark figure of 15 million euros.

Fiorentina possibly considers Mayoral to be Dusan Vlahovic’s replacement who has been linked with numerous top European clubs. Real Madrid could easily close the deal in the coming weeks due to their cordial relationship with Fiorentina.

Borja Mayoral is certainly a great striker, he’s 23 and he’s got a lot of potential in him but sadly he does not have a future at Real Madrid. And it’s not because of Luka Jovic or Mariano Diaz’s presence in the team, it’s because the club has bigger aspirations for the frontline such as signing  Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

Truth be told, players like Borja Mayoral, Luka Jovic, and Mariano Diaz do not have a future at the club irrespective of their talent and potential. I can confidently say, Real Madrid are not making a mistake in parting ways with Mayoral in January.

If the deal is closed, it’s not that Mayoral could never return to the club where he started his career. Sometime down the road, in the future, when the time is right, Borja Mayoral could return to Real Madrid and rewrite his story at the club. For now, there’s no future for the Spaniard at Madrid and he would be better off at Fiorentina.
