Gareth Bale

After scoring a fantastic brace in the final of the 2017/18 Champions League final against Liverpool at Kyiv, Gareth Bale spoke about his lack of regular playing time at Real Madrid. It was coming because the Welshman saw Isco being valued over him for big games. But with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving the club, the club couldn’t afford to lose another superstar in Bale. There were big-money offers for Bale, but they couldn’t let go of him at that point of time and the decision made sense.

But a year later, after 365 days filled with performances that couldn’t reach the expectations, injuries, and some off-the-field issues, Bale wanted to leave the club and even Real Madrid wanted to get rid of the Welshman. There was an agreement between Gareth Bale and the Chinese club Jiangsu Suning, but the deal broke down as Real Madrid didn’t think it was worth losing him for free with three years remaining on the contract.

At this moment, Florentino Perez might be bashing himself for the decision of not letting Bale leave for free in the summer of 2019. Because Bale’s contribution to Real Madrid is just 4 goals after 2019. He played well at Tottenham on loan, but he hasn’t done anything of note at Madrid. And to make it worse, he has missed the past two and a half months with a hamstring injury and picked up his latest injury in this international break, which will keep him out for three weeks.

If Bale’s contract was terminated in 2019, Real Madrid wouldn’t have received a single penny from his transfer, but they would have saved around 51 million euros in wages. They would have also saved a lot of time and could’ve generated space to accommodate another player.
