Borja Mayoral

Here is another player who should have been sold earlier not because of money, but because of the amount of time invested in him. Believe it or not, but this is Mayoral’s fourth consecutive season as a Real Madrid loanee. He spent two years on loan at Levante from 2018 to 2020, and now he is in his second season on loan at AS Roma. Not to forget that he spent a season on loan at Wolfsburg in 2016/17, which makes it five seasons on loan.

My choice of Mayoral might seem like an awkward one to some people, because Mayoral had a breakout season at Roma in 2020/21, with 17 goals and 7 assists to his name. He proved that he could be a player who is capable of playing at his boyhood club. But practically, there is no way Mayoral can make it at Real Madrid, given the current situation.

There are three strikers in Karim Benzema, Luka Jovic, and Mariano Diaz at Real Madrid. Though the latter two are expected to leave the club next summer, the club is expected to go after any of Erling Haaland or Karim Adeyemi, which means that there is no chance for Borja Mayoral. And looking at this, it wouldn’t make sense to hold onto Mayoral for longer.

And the fact that he is hardly getting any minutes under Jose Mourinho this season makes his situation worse, and there is a need to sell him soon. There is interest from Florentina, but nothing is concrete. His value will only decrease with time as he isn’t getting any playtime, and it will only make Perez regret his decision of loaning out Mayoral regularly, instead of getting rid of him for once and for all.
