Real Madrid Transfers: It turns out Kylian Mbappe’s dad is a Barcelona fan

Throughout the Kylian Mbappe transfer saga, Real Madrid fans have watched in admiration as the No. 7 has maintained his steadfast resolve to play for the club of his dreams. PSG have sent Mbappe contract offer after contract offer promising to make him the highest-paid player on the planet, they made signings to appease him, and they have put immense pressure on him through the media. Even politicians have begun to try and keep Mbappe in his home city of Paris, as if there weren’t enough things weighing on the 23-year-old.

Madridistas have wondered about the dynamics of his family in the deal as well. PSG’s financial offer puts a lot of money on the table for Mbappe and his family, and his father, Wilfried Mbappe, is his official agent. There were even rumblings that Mbappe’s dad pushed him to re-sign, but Mbappe declined – perhaps with the support of other members of his camp.

So it may not come as a surprise to Real Madrid fans that Wilfried is a Barcelona fan. By his own admission.

In a recent article, Sport’s Albert Masnou brought this point back to the surface, which many football fans were unaware of:

"“I’m a Barça fan but Kylian is Real Madrid. If he goes to Barça now, he could never end up playing for Madrid. If he goes to another club, he could still end up at Madrid.”"

Kylian Mbappe’s father has not let his own fandom influence anything

It appears to be a quote from 2017, but it is interesting nonetheless. Who would have thought his own father was a fan of the rivals? Maybe their opposing fandoms made Kylian an even stronger Madridista!

The cynical Madridistas will point to this as a reason to worry and may even think that it is a reason why Kylian has not joined Madrid sooner. But I believe most people will look at this and say that it shows how Kylian’s father is respectful of his son’s wishes.

What makes Mbappe’s father’s situation even more interesting is that he and Florentino Perez have known each other for more than a decade and are reportedly close. That furthers the idea that Mbappe’s journey from Monaco to Paris to Real Madrid has been part of the process all along and that Real have always been seen as the ultimate destination for the young man who grew up with Cristiano Ronaldo as his favorite player.

Mbappe was never going to play for Barcelona, not in 2017 and certainly at no point thereafter. His father may be his agent, but, like any agent, he acts in the best interest of his client, as complicated as that relationship becomes within a family unit.

Kylian has always dreamed of Madrid. All the rumors about Barça, Liverpool, United, Juventus, and whoever else in the past were just examples of false hope. And perhaps the renewal rumors regarding PSG are just as fanciful for those politicians in France…
