Real Madrid need to be active buyers in the coming summer transfer market, but they may not have much money left to spend if they tie up both Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland to major contracts. That said, if they make the right sales, Los Blancos could use that incoming capital to fund signings for the role players they need.

Another way to get quality players is to complete swap deals. These are not common, but there is a sense that they could start becoming more prevalent in football to make the numbers work with certain contracts.

Here are three players Real Madrid have little use for beyond 2021/22 and could try to use in swap deals this summer.

ST Luka Jovic

We begin with backup striker Luka Jovic, who was passed up on the bench against Real Sociedad for Mariano Diaz. Considering Jovic helped Real defeat La Real earlier this season at the Anoeta when Karim Benzema went down with an injury, Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to not bring on the Serbian international with the game well-won was a very surprising one.

But I guess it shows just how little value Jovic has to Madrid long-term. The club clearly wants Erling Haaland, and even if they don’t get him, it feels like they would rather go for a more well-rounded backup striker. Even Borja Mayoral, loaned to Getafe after leaving Roma due to Jose Mourinho’s differing plans and Tammy Abraham’s excellence, has more momentum.

Jovic to Dortmund? That is very unlikely. But there are a number of teams that could use him. Some Serie A clubs could be interested, and Atalanta look like an intriguing destination. Perhaps a Real could trade him for an up-and-coming midfielder or defender.
