Real Madrid and Marco Asensio are in extension talks, and while there are rumblings that Los Merengues want to keep him, Madridistas are both hoping these rumors are not true and are not convinced the club actually wants him around.

While Asensio’s eight goals have come in handy this season, his lack of all-around play hurts the team and puts them in situations where they need a goal from beyond the box to bail them out in the first place. Asensio does not work for the team defensively, cannot carry the ball, and has zero assists in LaLiga. He is a one-dimensional role player.

Now, Asensio could fill a role as a left-footed scorer off the bench, but only at the right price And since he wants an extension and a hefty salary, Real Madrid really should think twice about meeting that price. Brahim Diaz does not have Asensio’s scoring record, but he and Rodrygo Goes are more well-rounded. Long-term, Takefusa Kubo is a left-footer who could move to the first-team with a good year on loan at a bigger club than Mallorca.

Last summer, Real Madrid sold one of the best center backs on the planet and a club icon in Raphael Varane, because he could both fetch them a significant transfer fee and because they wanted to save money on extending him with a better, young center back coming up the ranks in Eder Militao.

Asensio is in a similar situation, except he isn’t half as good of a right winger as Varane is a center back. In truth, Asensio isn’t even a right winger. So Real Madrid can sell Asensio to a team that loves his name value and goals and come away the better for it.
