Real Madrid will face Atletico Madrid on Sunday night at the Wanda Metropolitano for LaLiga’s Matchday 35, with Los Blancos having already sealed their record 35th LaLiga title last weekend against Espanyol with a 4-0 win.
A lot of rotations are expected against Los Rojiblancos, and one of them will involve a player making his first LaLiga start in a highly-anticipated move.
Carlo Ancelotti announced at Saturday’s press conference before the match that he will rest Thibaut Courtois, who once helped lead Atleti to a Champions League Final, for the young Andriy Lunin this Sunday.
Lunin was the keeper in the Copa del Rey and played well, but this is his first opportunity in LaLiga.
Andriy Lunin is getting his first big chance at Real Madrid
The Ukrainian has been waiting patiently for his turn in goal, and although it seemed like Ancelotti would want to keep Courtois sharp and not take a risk against such a tough opponent, Madridistas are very happy to see Lunin in goal vs. Atleti.
This is a massive opportunity for the 23-year-old goalkeeper. Lunin is one of the most promising young keepers in European football, and Real Madrid fans know he has the tools to be a great starter at several teams in LaLiga.
He may have to leave in order to fulfill his potential with Courtois not slowing down any time soon, but Madridistas would love to see him have some success and opportunities in Madrid first.

So El Derbi is a real chance for Lunin to shine. Atleti still have dangerous attackers like Angel Correa even with a few of their big names out, so Lunin will definitely be on his toes. Los Rojiblancos have everything to play for at the Wanda with a top-four finish still on the line, but you had better believe Lunin will be game for them with his quick reflexes.
