Real Madrid goalkeeping prospect Andriy Lunin has been very impressive in the 2021/22 season. He made no mistakes in some quality Copa del Rey appearances, showed great distribution in El Derbi, and was recently Man of the Match in a top performance against Cadiz in LaLiga.
But Lunin is playing so well that Los Blancos are expected to lose him for at least the short-term future. The Ukrainian standout is mulling over a loan move this summer.
Lunin had spent some time on loan with teams in the lower divisions, but he’s never had a loan move where he has started for a team in LaLiga. That should change following his great performances this season, and he is too good to be a bench player for Madrid. He needs to play. But since Real have the best goalkeeper in the world in Thibaut Courtois, Lunin can never get those minutes in Madrid.
David Ospina could replace Andriy Lunin at Real Madrid
According to a report from MARCA’s Jose Felix Diaz, Andriy Lunin is indeed planning on leaving the Merengues this summer for a new opportunity. Real Madrid understand this and are zeroing in on a possible replacement.
Their main target? A player who worked with Carlo Ancelotti at Napoli and is having a great season in Serie A, Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina.
Like former Madridista James Rodriguez, Ospina emerged on the radar with a great 2014 World Cup. His big move was to Arsenal, though he never really established himself there.
If Ospina is willing to move to the Santiago Bernabeu to be Courtois’ backup, he would be a good, affordable signing for the Merengues. Ospina would be a better backup than the player who was Real’s option behind Courtois in 2019/20, former PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Fabian Ruiz is the main Napoli player linked to Madrid, but now Ospina looks like the most likely former player to rejoin Carletto. Lunin’s future is cloudy, but if he goes, the backup keeper position should still be in good hands.
