Luka Modric is expected to sign a contract renewal with Real Madrid shortly. The process is essentially a formality at this point, as Lukita is a Madrid legend through and through, with his importance to the club remaining as high as ever. Without him, Real would not be in the Champions League Final this season. Nobody will ever forget that game-changing trivela assist against Chelsea any time soon.

But not even Modric can play forever, no matter how unstoppable he still is at the age of 36. Real Madrid already have two great midfielders of the future – and present, really – in Fede Valverde and sensational 2021 summer signing Eduardo Camavinga. Still, they want more.

Jude Bellingham has been tossed around as one possible long-term Modric replacement, and you will find other Madridistas clamoring for Serie A technician Nicolo Barella.

Former Real Madrid left midfielder and LaLiga winner Alvaro Benito chimed in with his own opinion, picking out Manchester City star Bernardo Silva as his ideal successor to Luka Modric in the Madrid midfield:

"“No player can fully replace Luka Modric (when required in the future). But if I had to bet on one name who could, it would be Bernardo Silva. He was very good vs Real Madrid in both games.”"

Bernardo Silva should be on Real Madrid’s transfer radar

Firstly, Benito is spot-on when he says that there is absolutely nobody who can “fully replace” the Croatian magician. It is impossible. He is too good all-around as a creator, ball-carrier, and defender. Modric does it all.

But Silva is a great shout. There are many Real Madrid fans who want Silva, and he seems to like the club as well. Signing him from City is logistically difficult, and even though Real eliminated them in this year’s Champions League, there is no doubting the quality and financial power of the Premier League’s most successful club.

Initially a right winger, the left-footed Silva has made an amazing transition to midfield this season, instrumental to Pep Guardiola’s side’s best performances. The 27-year-old is entering his prime, and he has 11 goals and 7 assists between the Premier League and Champions League in the 2021/22 season. He averages more than 1.5 key passes per game and 1.5 dribbles completed per game in league play.

Silva is indeed a dream target for Real Madrid and can bring the creativity Real would need whenever they have to say goodbye to Modric. Is he the only option? Of course not. Is he an excellent option? As we saw first-hand in the Champions League, he absolutely is.
