Real Madrid were winners of the 2021/22 Champions League, capping off one of the most incredible seasons we have ever season in the competition. Three remontadas and a final to remember in Paris.

It is no surprise to see that four Madrid players made it to UEFA’s official Champions League Team of the Season, but they were matched by four Liverpool players. Though Karim Benzema, Vinicius Jr., Thibaut Courtois, and Luka Modric fully deserved to make this XI and are Ballon d’Or candidates,  it was frustrating to see that other Madrid players were snubbed.

David Alaba, for example, has a serious case for being over Virgil van Dijk. Just compare the two of them in the final. Alaba stopped several dangerous plays before they could even develop. What was van Dijk doing on that goal Liverpool allowed?

Casemiro was the biggest Real Madrid snub

Kylian Mbappe making it over Rodrygo Goes may make sense if you look at the raw numbers, but Rodrygo only played 504 minutes. He scored five goals with two assists, including the goal that saved his team from defeat against Chelsea and then two goals to save the Merengues against Manchester City in the semifinal.

Then we go to the biggest snub, Casemiro. In what universe is Fabinho over him in the Champions League Team of the Season? Fabinho, a former Madridista himself, is a great player in his own right, but he was nowhere near Case in this campaign. Again, look at the head-to-head performance in the final, which is the most important match of the entire competition.

Fede Valverde may also feel hard-done to not be in the final XI, but Alaba and Casemiro are definitely the two biggest snubs. They were the best players at their positions in this tournament; there is no doubt about that in my mind.

But at least four Madrid stars were recognized, all four were among the elite of the elite. They were the four very best players in the entire competition: Benzema, Vinicius, Tibo, and Lukita.
