With Real Madrid signing one of the best centre-backs available in Antonio Rudiger, the left-back position should be the least of Madrid’s priorities. The move hints at the possibility of David Alaba moving to the left, leaving Rudiger and Militao as the unrivalled centre-back pairing. Exactly as it should be, in my opinion. Militao is far too pivotal to be benched and as good as Alaba is as a centre-back, his offensive qualities perfectly equip him to assume the left-back role.

To add to this, Real Madrid already possesses one of the best left-backs in the world. Ferland Mendy was arguably the best defensive fullback in the world this season. Emphasis on the word ‘defensive’. The possibility of a player of his calibre being benched next season tells you all you need to know about the club’s healthy left-back condition.

There’s also an interesting prospect in Miguel Gutierrez, who has already exhibited glimpses of brilliance when given the opportunity.

As I said, a left-back should be at the bottom of Real Madrid’s list of positions that need an upgrade. Regardless, there have been several reports linking Los Blancos to several prospects. If the club is indeed going for a new left-back, here are some promising options in the market.

Fran Garcia

The most likely scenario out of the bunch. Garcia is a formerly Castilla left-back, currently at Rayo Vallecano. He has been heavily linked with Real Madrid ever since that impressive defensive display at Camp Nou, where he was fundamental in Rayo’s historic 0-1 win over Barcelona.

According to Sergio Santos, Real Madrid will sign Fran Garcia in case there is an exit in defense this summer. If not, he will continue at Rayo and join in 2023, predicated on the fact that he keeps progressing. As of now, it doesn’t look like Real Madrid have any departures lined up at the back.

When asked about the same, Garcia said, “I try to stay calm and keep my feet on the ground. Right now I’m a Rayo player, I’m happy here and I feel at home. It is an honor to be part of this great family.”

Financially, the signing is realistic and viable. At Rayo, his release clause happens to be 10 million Euros. Regardless, his signing wouldn’t cost Real Madrid more than 5 million Euros, since there is a 50% sell-on clause under the current contract.

He had a decent run this season with Rayo Vallecano, starting over 34 games. His performances, however, induce a great deal of concern over the offensive front, with him accounting for just one goal and zero assists in those 34 games. A similar profile to Mendy in the offensive regard.

All in all, his signing couldn’t hurt. He doesn’t expect the starting spot and barely costs anything. Not to mention the immense potential he possesses.
