Karim Benzema’s most ideal backup wants to stay at Real Madrid
Being Karim Benzema’s backup, or even Thibaut Courtois’ backup isn’t something to look forward to at Real Madrid. You’re rarely going to play, and when you do, you probably wouldn’t be match fit, and if you’re not, then you’re probably not going to perform that well.
Andriy Lunin did gain some momentum and played well whenever he was fielded, but the same can’t be said for Mariano or Jovic, the latter of whom had to leave the club this summer in search of more minutes.
It’d be fair to honestly have Rodrygo or Eden Hazard become a makeshift striker whenever Benzema is not around, but, to be quite honest, Borja Mayoral doesn’t sound like a terrible idea, either. He’s very similar to Benzema in some ways, can press well and even score a couple of goals every now and then.
According to Mario Cortegana, the club wants to get 10 million euros for his sale, but Mayoral actually wants to stay at the club.
Teams like Getafe, Bologna and Celta are interested in signing Borja Mayoral of Real Madrid
if Mayoral stays he’d occupy an extra roster spot, of course he would. But, it would give Benzema an actual back-up, and if the Spaniard is actually willing to stay at the club, well, then it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to give him a shot, would it?
Like, think about it. I wasn’t the biggest Mayoral fan when he was last at Real Madrid, but he definitely has improved since then and it wouldn’t be the worst idea to make Mayoral play a role that’s similar to what he likes doing most.
It would be a good little experiment, and if he doesn’t do well, the club can try to offload him later in the summer, because right now the club has no intentions of offering him an extension, and his contract expires in 2023. That’s what makes it all a bit tricky.

That could change if Mayoral does well. All I’m saying is, give him a shot. We wouldn’t know until we try. Mayoral would feel more at home and at ease as a Benzema replacement than Rodrygo or Hazard, can’t really hurt to try him out. And there is a long time to go until the end of the transfer window, so Real have time to decide. I won’t be against the idea if they do try to sell him, but I am not totally against the idea of keeping him around for at least a little bit.
