Kylian Mbappe’s transfer to Real Madrid was expected to be one of the greatest and most awaited transfers in the club’s history. More than two years ago, there were more frequent rumours that the Frenchman would be arriving, and a few months ago, the media’s coverage of the situation was so persuasive that Madrid almost took the transfer for granted.
The player garnered accolades from the Bernabeu despite the fact that he was the reason Los Blancos lost the first leg against Paris Saint-Germain. Having your name sung by the ruthless and ever demanding Bernabeu, you’ve got to be someone really, really special.
Mbappe got treatment befitting a legend even before joining Madrid. All of this would have remained and escalated if the player had not decided to play a last-minute gambit and betray the people who had loved him for years.
It is well known that Mbappe was under continual pressure to extend his contract from PSG management, which he continued to do until the club owned by the Emir of Qatar made an offer he was unable to refuse.
Since the player turned his back on Real Madrid, rumours have continued to circulate that the offer is extremely financially burdensome. Some argue that political influence had a part as well, which we do not deny, but claiming that money was never a factor is clear and uneducated falsehood.
The financial terms of Kylian Mbappe’s new contract with PSG have been disclosed
According to a recent story published by the New York Times (via Marca), the exact amount of money that Kylian Mbappe was enticed by and used to refused Real Madrid has been disclosed.
According to the New York Times, Mbappe will earn about 250 million euros over the course of the three seasons for which he has renewed his contract. This equates to almost 83 million euros every season.
Furthermore, according to the source, Paris Saint-Germain paid Mbappe about 125 million euros as a signing bonus, the biggest sum ever given as a signing bonus to a player in football history.
When asked about the money, Mbappe stated that it was not what influenced his decision to stay with the French club and went on to say:
"“Because wherever I go, I’m going to get money, I’m this type of player everywhere I go,”"
We might never know for sure whether Mbappe’s assertion that money did not play a role in his decision making is accurate.
