Following the introduction of the European Super League by Real Madrid and others last year, UEFA has been intent on revising the present framework of European football in recent years, adding new tournaments and attempting to make the existing ones more competitive.

The governing body recognised the flaws in the present system and has worked tirelessly to improve the existing structure in order to delight and attract more fans.

The current structure of the UEFA Super Cup proposes that the competition be staged between two clubs from the previous season’s Champions League and Europa League champions. Some adjustments, though, are said to be being explored among the top executives of the European football governing body following another story of the same type made the rounds a while back.

UEFA is studying the possibilities of a new final four format for the Super Cup

According to The Guardian, UEFA intends to expand the current one-match competition into a four-team competition. According to the source, the next two Super Cup participants might be the champions of the newly launched competition – the UEFA Conference League and the Champions of Major League Soccer, the premier football event in the United States of America.

While the rationale for changing the format to include the third tier European competition, Conference League, is justified because the Super Cup is essentially held between the winners of the various formats of continental club competitions, the reasoning for including teams from MLS sounds absurd and is widely derided by fans across the internet.

UEFA has recently been attracted by the expanding football fans in the United States, and the organization is eager to capture the untapped market as quickly as possible.

Several big clubs have reportedly expressed interest in playing some big Champions League games outside of Europe in the US and other Asian and Middle Eastern countries in order to expand the market and attraction towards European football, and the decision to include MLS teams in the Super Cup is very much in the same vein.

The Guardian also adds that at the meetings set to discuss this new format, ideas for making the new Super Cup games to be played alongside weekend festivals and pop stars performing at half time would be examined.

Real Madrid won the most recent Super Cup, defeating Eintracht Frankfurt, and the competition will be more competitive than a single game cup under the new format.
