Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler has been a revelation this season, despite already being close to a starter last time around. It seems like Guler has taken another step forward in his development as a football player and is now becoming the player everyone thought he was going to be at some point. It is all happening so quickly that people are not realising that he is still a very young player who still has a lot of developing to do.
Guler was incredible against Sevilla on Sunday night, and in the deep position that he played, he had a brilliant match. His passing and creativity were on full display during the match, and it just seemed like there was no one who could stop him. Everyone associates Guler as a player who will be brilliant for Real Madrid's future, and rightfully so.
He will be, but the point is that maybe he's not just a player for the future anymore. He needs to become a starter in Jose Mourinho's mind, and that will only happen once Mourinho realises he is no longer a talent preserved for future years.
Arda Guler is 'the present' for Real Madrid, not just the future
Even Jose Mourinho, in some of his press conferences since becoming Real Madrid manager, talks about Guler in future tense. He always says that Guler will be a world-class deep-lying playmaker and that he has a lot of potential and a lot of talent.
The first point there is obviously true because, even though he was brilliant against Sevilla, there is still a lot of developing to do in that position. However, he's not just got potential. He is also one of the best midfielders in the world right now.
He is a youngster, so obviously he will still be a very good talent for the future, but the truth is, people need to stop referring to him as just that. He is a superstar in the making, but he is already a star, and he is performing with a consistency of one.
Guler is one of Real Madrid's best players. He has been like that for the last year or so, and no matter what people say about his talent for the future, you don't have to look at that anymore. He is the now. He is the present for this Real Madrid side, and it is a very good thing that Mourinho has found a way to play him in a deeper role while also not sacrificing Jude Bellingham's qualities as an attacking midfielder.
It is a very short sample size, but interchanging them could work out really well, and that is exactly what Real Madrid need. Fans can debate how good he is all they want, but the truth is, they need to stop referring to him as the future, because at the moment there is no one better at what Guler does for Real Madrid, than Guler himself. If he already isn't a starter in Mourinho's mind, that needs to change as soon as possible.
