Arsenal have put together a master-plan behind the scenes. They hope to deter star defender William Saliba from even considering a Real Madrid transfer.

Arsenal are making great progress as a club. In the last few seasons, they have come annoyingly close to lifting the Premier League trophy, for the first time since the early 2000s.

Returning to the Champions League too, the Gunners host a squad centred around world-class players. One of those players has landed within the radar of Real Madrid.

Over the last few weeks, star defender William Saliba has been increasingly linked with a Real Madrid transfer. The Frenchman has until 2027 on his Emirates Stadium contract but this won't stop Real Madrid from sniffing around him.

According to a new report from TEAMtalk, Arsenal are now putting together a bumper contract extension to offer to William Saliba. They hope this will deter him from considering a move away.

William Saliba last signed a contract extension at Arsenal in 2023, off the back of his incredible breakthrough season in 2022/23.

As it stands, though, William Saliba is not within the top 5 earners at Arsenal. This is not reflective of his ability, since he is arguably the most important player at the club.

In fact, the Gunners crumble whenever he is not available. In the 2022/23 season, they lost the title race due to his injury in the second half of the campaign.

So, Arsenal will be in no hurry to sell William Saliba to Real Madrid. In fact, it was even claimed yesterday that the Gunners are not fazed by Real Madrid's interest and that they are confident about keeping him at the Emirates Stadium.

Real Madrid would like to strengthen their defence for the future. They tried to sign young centre-back Leny Yoro in the 2024 summer transfer window, but failed. So, they will try again in the next few transfer windows.

As it stands, Real Madrid have an exceptional squad. In fact, they are the best team in the world for this reason. However, always having an eye on the future, Carlo Ancelotti will plan to implement a bulletproof core for after his retirement.

Real Madrid's current options at centre-back are by no means depleting. The likes of Antonio Rudiger are only getting better with age. However, given that Real Madrid only have one centre back under 30 (Eder Militao), they must be forward-thinking here.
