Real Madrid have been heavily linked with Enzo Fernández recently. However, the club has announced that they are not interested in him.
A Real Madrid statement read, "In light of the reports and statements that have appeared in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid CF in the player Enzo Fernández, the club wishes to state that it has not made any effort, either direct or indirect, to sign the aforementioned player and, likewise, has no intention of undertaking such an operation."
It will make for brutal reading for Fernández, who flirted with the idea of joining Los Blancos last season. His comments that he made during an international break led to him being suspended by Chelsea.
It is not often that clubs announce that they are not signing a player. It now begs the question of where the rumors were coming from. The fingers will point to his agent, Javier Pastore, who used to play for Paris Saint-Germain. Pastore has even publicly said that he is working to get Fernández a transfer away from Stamford Bridge.
Where could Enzo Fernández go now?
It appeared that Fernández had his heart set on Real Madrid, but he will not be getting that move. He has been linked with other clubs. However, we will now have to take these rumors with a pinch of salt after Los Blancos debunked claims that he could be joining them.
Manchester City could be an option, especially as they now have Enzo Maresca in charge. Fernández scored 15 goals with 19 assists in 79 games for Maresca at Chelsea. They won the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup together. However, City look set to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Therefore, it is unlikely that they will need Fernández as well.
PSG are another team reportedly interested. However, their philosophy of spending big money on star names has changed. The club now favors developing their own young French players. They also already have a solid midfield of Vitinha, Warren Zaïre-Emery and Joao Nevez.
Real Madrid's loss could be Barcelona's gain. After Los Blancos made their statement, Fernández may feel like joining their bitter rivals, Barca. It would certainly add more spice to El Clásico.
The Premier League champions, Arsenal, are also looking to strengthen their midfield. They have been targeting Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United. However, after selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, it is unlikely that they will sell Guimaraes too.
The Fernandez transfer saga will likely drag on all summer. After Real Madrid quashed rumors of him joining them, not many fans will believe more transfer speculation regarding the player. It may even be worth him sticking it out at Chelsea. Fernández could be given a fresh start under the new manager, Xabi Alonso.
