Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has set his sights on the club's 16th Champions League title after retaining his seat as the club's figurehead.
Perez saw off Enrique Requelme in the club's presential elections, keeping hold of the seat he has held since 2009, although he also held the position from 2000 to 2006.
It is no real surprise that Perez has won the elections, given he has overseen a very successful period in the club's history, and one of the most successful in terms of Champions League success. He has also helped deliver countless major signings, which is a currency of its own in the Spanish capital.
Perez wants another Champions League
While many Real Madrid fans want to see the gap to Barcelona bridged in La Liga, given the Blaugrana's recent dominance, Perez is eyeing another Champions League title following his reappointment.
"I want to thank everyone who took part in an exemplary event, despite the challenges we faced today," he said in his press conference. "Since 2000, I have worked to promote unity and institutional stability. That remains my commitment. I want to continue building a club that leads all the most prestigious international rankings. And all of this to keep winning: we will fight until the end to win the sixteenth title. And we will work to ensure that our values are the pillars of the future."
The long-serving president also said: "This has been a great day for Madrid. Thank you for your support, affection, and strength in helping us win this election. We won at every polling station—that is, across all age groups. And we achieved the second-best result in the history of Real Madrid elections; the first was also ours in 2004. It could have been even better, because 1,000 absentee ballots were invalidated, and we are going to appeal that decision.”
Running it back with Mourinho
José Mourinho is now expected to be announced as the next manager of Real Madrid following Perez's re-election, which was key in ratifying the deal that has been verbally agreed for some time.
Mourinho was previously brought in to disrupt Barcelona's dominance during their golden generation under Pep Guardiola, and the Portuguese boss succeeded in winning a La Liga title.
Perez is hoping that strategy will work again, this time to disrupt Barca's dominance under Hansi Flck, although that mission feels much more achievable than it was against that once-in-a-generation team that had with Guardiola.
Mourinho will be expected to deliver titles, and from what Perez has said, it seems that expectation will not only extend to the European stage, but it might begin with it.
