According to a report from The Athletic, Andriy Lunin and Raul Asencio are not in Jose Mourinho's plans at Real Madrid. Both Lunin and Asensio have yet to play a single minute for Real Madrid this season. Asensio has been out with an injury, and Lunin is unfortunately second fiddle to the best goalkeeper in the world, Thibaut Courtois.
As a result, these are the only two players who haven't played a single minute so far this season. It is understandable why he would say that about Asencio, because he has been injured for a very long time and has not really impressed enough to warrant a spot in the squad after his first season at the club.
Raul Asencio may be understandable, but what has Andriy Lunin done wrong?
In the last year or so, Asencio has not really had that many good performances. His injury record, as well as his off-the-pitch problems that came to light a few weeks ago, is something that would not really be appreciated by Mourinho in the slightest.
Even without Asencio, Real would have four centre-backs available, and although a couple of those centre-backs are very injury-prone, they still have some really good options. The hope was for Asencio to leave and for a centre-back to come in, which would have made the situation so much better for the club, but that did not end up happening. Real Madrid now have this problem to deal with.
As for Lunin, it is a bit more difficult to understand. He has been a very solid option whenever Courtois has been injured or rested by Real Madrid. He has had some bad performances, but most of his games have been really solid for Real Madrid. He has never really complained about minutes. He has never wanted to leave the club for a better team because he likes his role at the club, so it is hard to understand what Lunin has done to not be a part of Mourinho's plans at Real Madrid.
It is not like the club can go without having a second-choice goalkeeper because Courtois is not getting any younger. If they need someone to play between the sticks when Courtois is being rested, there is no better goalkeeper at Real Madrid than Lunin.
Obviously, they have some great talent coming out from the academy, but Lunin is the most experienced, consistent goalkeeper. It does not really make sense why Jose Mourinho would not want him in his plans.
With Asencio, it is more believable. With Lunin, maybe it is something that happened in training. But from the information that everyone has, Lunin being one of those players just does not make sense. Hopefully, he gets a chance to prove Mourinho wrong at some point this season.
