Cox Energy founder and CEO Enrique Riquelme is challenging Florentino Perez to become the Real Madrid president this year, and while he is facing an uphill battle, the Spanish businessman is pulling out all the stops and appears both serious and desperate to unseat a man who has become synonymous with the world's biggest club.
Riquelme has been busy selling Real Madrid fans on the big changes he has in mind for his sporting project. He is telling everyone he has a world class manager of his own to counter Jose Mourinho, with Madridistas wondering if he is talking about Jurgen Klopp or Mikel Arteta. And he is also telling everyone that in addition to wanting Rodri from Manchester City, he has two big superstars planned for Real Madrid this summer.
Now, Madridistas are not buying what he is selling and do not want to see Perez go despite the mistakes since Carlo Ancelotti's last Champions League rown in 2024, so Riquelme, knowing that, is planning on getting into the specifics soon.
Enrique Riquelme has big promises for Real Madrid fans
In a recent interview, Enrique Riquelme dropped a time line and a hint on his next announcement. Via the Madrid Zone, the Real Madrid presidential candidate said, "On Wednesday, I will announce the signing of a foreign player for Real Madrid. He is not Spanish."
That's not exactly a specific hint on the actual player Riquelme has signed, sealed, and delivered to the Real Madrid supporters if elected, but at least it's something. So at this point, Riquelme has told Madridistas that he has two signings: a Spanish World Cup player and a foreign player. Both are said to be superstars, and Madridistas, cynically, are wondering if he is actually overselling on someone like Rodri or Victor Munoz with the Spanish national team comment, trying to bait a few people into thinking of Barcelona's Pedri or Lamine Yamal (but Riquelme is no Florentino to pull off a Luis Figo move of his own).
Real Madrid fans, again, are going to believe it when they see it with Riquelme, and he has to know that deep down. It is exciting to hear big promises, and it is at least reassuring that Riquelme is giving specific dates. So Madridistas are going to be keenly glued for news from Riquelme on Wednesday regarding the exact foreign superstar he has tabbed to join Los Blancos as one of his big counterweights to the Florentino Perez campaign.
