Incoming Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is not a man to mess with, and, likewise, he does not mess around when it comes to ridding the squad of players who no longer fit his vision, seem uncoachable, or just are not plain good enough.
With how bad Real Madrid were and how much they underperformed in the past two seasons despite adding Kylian Mbappe to a Champions League winning side, president Florentino Perez has given the respected Portuguese manager free reign to do as he pleases.
Already, Real Madrid have brought in four big names this summer in Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Marc Cucurella, and Denzel Dumfries - and more players are expected to join the club shortly. But that also means Mourinho needs to get rid of players the club does not need in order to make space for the new upgrades.
Real Madrid set to officially part ways with their first player
As Fabrizio Romano has confirmed from reports circulating around the Spanish media, Jose Mourinho has told Dani Ceballos and Real Madrid that the Spanish midfielder is not in his plans at all. Ceballos will officially leave the club this summer as a free agent, ending a mixed tenure in Madrid that included key contributions to two Champions Leagues but also mediocre seasons and transfer sagas in which the player refused to leave.
Ceballos bottomed out last season, showing an ugly side and an ego that he does not merit, fighting with manager Alvaro Arbeloa and causing disunity in the locker room over frustrations that he was not playing. Arbeloa and Jose Mourinho are close, so Arbeloa undoubtedly gave Jose all the juicy details on Ceballos.
But regardless of what Dani Ceballos did or did not do, the fact of the matter is that he is not good enough for Real Madrid and showed it last season. He defended poorly, failed to create chances, and did not play well with the rest of the team. Real Madrid have better box to box midfielders than the former Real Betis man, who will, in all likelihood, head back to Betis this summer.
It is sad that Ceballos has to leave Real Madrid a villain, and had he left after the club won the Champions League when he should have walked away with dignity, he would have been a beloved cult hero at the Santiago Bernabeu. But as they say, if you stick around long enough, you eventually become the villain, and Real Madrid fans will say "good riddance" as the club axes another mole at the behest of Mou.
