Real Madrid sent shockwaves across the footballing world when they spent a whopping 140 million euros, including add ons, to sign RB Leipzig phenom Yan Diomande after just one season, albeit a truly special one, in the Bundesliga. It is a record fee that surpasses even Eden Hazard's, and it places a world of expectations on Diomande, who snubbed the likes of Liverpool and PSG in order to sign with Real after the Merengues were the ones to finally give in to Leipzig's and Roc Nation's rather exorbitant demands.
Diomande comes with such a high price tag and, thus, expectations that Real Madrid fans are already saying some pretty wild things about him, already discussing the 19 year old prospect as if he were someone destined to be a bust, a total unknown, or the result of bad scouting. And it doesn't help that many Madridistas are fed up with loading on attackers and are even more upset at Florentino Perez for missing out on Rodri in the midfield - to rivals Barcelona, of all clubs to lose out on a world class player to.
But Diomande should not suffer the wrath of the Madridistas, and it is totally unfair to act as if he is a scrub or someone not deserving of a 140 million euro transfer in a market that is increasingly favoring higher and higher fees to the sort of young, future superstar profile that Real Madrid and Perez are always obsessed with.
Yan Diomande is what Real Madrid were looking for
Because Yan Diomande checks off so many boxes, which is why Jose Mourinho badly wanted him for Real Madrid in the first place once it became obvious Michael Olise would not be leaving Bayern Munich this summer transfer window.
Diomande is versatile and can play on either flank at a high level, he is close to being two footed, he had 20 goal contributions last season, he is one of the most skilled and productive dribblers in world football, he brings much needed pace on the right side, and he has a great character and work rate with the drive to succeed or help the team by any means necessary (including defending as a forward).
For some reason, Real Madrid fans still doubt Florentino Perez, Jose Mourinho, and club decision makers on these kinds of deals, but, historically, when Mou sticks his neck out for a player, he is 100 percent right. And a lot of these Madridistas slagging off Diomande and the club for this 140 million euro transfer are about to be made to look very foolish by the Special One soon enough.
