Even though Portuguese legend Jose Mourinho is a bit of a divisive figure in world football these days and has not won at the elite level in quite a few years, most Real Madrid fans are ecstatic about the return of the Special One to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, which remains a foregone conclusion despite a new presidential election at the club causing a delay.
Mourinho already rescued Real Madrid once before, and he is prepared to do so again with a talented but underperforming squad that needs its egos and indolence to be shapen up by the loudest man in the sport.
Already, Mourinho is prepared to exercise all the power vested in him by Florentino Perez by shaking the squad up defensively, as that has been a weak link for Real Madrid for years, even when they were winning Champions League crowns under Don Carlo Ancelotti.
Jose Mourinho has a big request for Real Madrid
According to a report from Onda Cero, via Madrid Xtra, Jose Mourinho has made a special request to Real Madrid that the vast majority of fans would wholeheartedly agree with and feel the need to see. Mourinho wants the team to bring in a major signing at the center back position this summer.
David Alaba is leaving for free after a few below average, injury plagued years, and Raul Asencio is going to leave after an even worse 2025/26 season. Antonio Rudiger will sign a new, short term deal, but he has shown cracks. Dean Huijsen is not ready for stardom yet. And Eder Militao is coming off another bad injury. So Real Madrid have nothing sure fire in central defense going into the summer transfer window.
Mourinho's dream option appears to be Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni, and that may be the biggest dream get he has in mind for the Merengues. But there are other big names available. Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate is coming off a rough season but was once world class for the Reds; the Frenchman is available for free. Luka Vuskovic, Cristian Romero, and Micky van de Ven are a trio of options from Tottenham Hotspur. And Nico Schlotterbeck from Bundesliga friend club Borussia Dortmund is available for an affordable release clause after another stellar season.
Real Madrid need multiple quality center backs to join Dean Huijsen, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, and potentially the young guns Jacobo Ramon and Joan Martinez. Most importantly, they need one of those guys to be an elite signing like a Schlotterbeck or Bastoni, so Madridistas will be happy to see that is what Mourinho wants, too.
