Mou already turned a Real that was lifeless and trophyless in back to back seasons into the lions of the 2010s and 2020s Champions League knockout stages.
But in addition to needing to change the Real Madrid culture around again, Mourinho needs to help Florentino and the board improve the level of the squad. Already, Real Madrid are rumored to be serious about signing multiple defensive players at the behest of Mou, and his priority transfer target appears to be Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan.
The left footed center back for the Serie A champions has been one of the world's best for years, registering two Champions League Final appearances in three seasons with now multiple Serie A titles under multiple different managers.

And Bastoni appears to be winking to Real Madrid and the former Inter Milan treble winner Mourinho. Per the Madrid Zone, Alessandro Bastoni liked a post by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano announcing the Mourinho to Madrid move on Instagram.
It may seem like such a small thing, but a player of the stature of Bastoni at an elite club like Inter Milan isn't going to visibly "like" a post on a large social media platform in a public forum that he knows people are going to look at by accident, especially at a time when his name is being linked directly to Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid.
Bastoni is very much on the table for Real. He has been mentioned in transfer rumors all year long, mostly to rivals Barcelona, but with his expected cost and now the link to Mou, Real have to be considered the favorites for him if they make a serious play to the Nerazzurri financially.
Entering the prime of his career, Bastoni is the best passer and progressor in the position, and signing him would be a rare opportunity for Real Madrid to add an elite player with game breaking ability on the ball as a center back - and with the left foot no less. Real Madrid are desperate for defensive help, and Mourinho will stop at nothing to get real world class talent in his back four. Bastoni has become the main man to watch.
